When I was a teenager I worked at a cheese store at our local market. The best part was getting to try all sorts of cheeses and crackers. We sold Scottish oatcakes which were sweet, thick crackers that went great with cheese and jam.
Nairn's was kind enough to send me some samples of their oat crackers and cookies. They are wheat-free and high in fibre. Both the crackers and cookies come wrapped in individual six-packs, which is a great way to keep them fresh.
The traditional Scottish oat crackers came in organic, roughly milled and cheese flavours. They are quite thick and hearty. I like them best with a sweeter topping like creamy goat's cheese and fig jam.
The Light & Crispy oat crackers with sunflower seeds were our favourite of the crackers. These are more similar to a traditional thin wheat cracker but with the heartiness of oats.
We topped them with sliced cherry tomatoes and basil from our garden and slices of bocconcini. They are great with cheese and spreads as well.
We also tried three flavours of cookies and really enjoyed them all. They are a great snack to take to work - not too sweet but very flavourful and filling.
The mixed berry and chocolate chip cookies were a big hit, but we particularly loved the stem ginger oat cookies. For people who love ginger, these are fantastic. The ginger flavour is very fresh and very strong.
These ginger oat cookies were tasty on their own, but even better when we spread them with dark chocolate and topped them with fruit and some fresh mint.
Fresh figs and cherries worked well with the ginger flavour.
These cookies make a tasty afternoon snack with some green tea, and I suspect they would be great crushed and used to replace graham crackers in a pie crust. I may just try that too!
