Patty Melts

This may be obvious to many people, but patty melts are great!  I'd never had one before and was pleasantly surprised by how simple and delicious they are.  It's not a particularly healthy choice, since it's basically a burger crossed with a grilled cheese sandwich, but it really hits the spot.

All you need is:
Ground beef

Rye bread
Swiss cheese
Onions
Butter

Season the beef with salt and pepper and a bit of Worcestershire sauce, if you like.

Form into patties.  I made mine a little oblong to fit better on the bread.

While grilling the patties, sauté some thinly sliced onions in butter until caramelized, then remove them from the pan.

Melt some more butter in the pan and add slices of rye bread.  I used my favourite marble rye.

Top each slice of bread with a slice of Swiss cheese.

Then spread each with some fried onions.

Top with your grilled burger patties.

Then top the burgers with another slice of rye bread and flip to toast the other side.  Add some more butter to the pan if necessary so it gets nice and brown.

Look how nice and melty!

You can slice it in half like a sandwich to serve.  We had this with fresh, local corn on the cob and salad and it was just great!  If you want a change from a regular ol' hamburger, you can't beat this!
